While a permit is not required to take the class, students should try to have a permit before they take the class. This will allow them to start practicing with parents and complete driving requirements here for your license. Permit tests can be scheduled and taken at the Utah DLD any time after the students 15th birthday.
All driving requirements must be completed within 1 year of the classroom portion or you may have to repeat all phases required for your license including all classroom and driving requirements. You will not receive a refund if you do not complete the requirements within the 1-year period.
Attendance: Utah state law requires that students must pass a certified driver education class to receive their first Utah Driver License. Students must complete a minimum of 27 classroom hours or 30 online hours to satisfy this requirement. Any type of absence or tardy (more than 30 minutes late) counts against a student’s 27 hours of instruction whether it is excused or not. To meet the required classroom time requirement students may not miss more than 3 classroom days during the quarter.
Course Objectives: It is our position that Driver Education is merely a “beginning” for students. While we cannot provide them with every driving experience and all-encompassing driving wisdom, we do believe that focusing on basic fundamentals of attitude and skill can help a driver education student begin to develop safe and sound driving habits that become lifetime skills. The course objectives below are based upon a practical philosophy of defensive driving. We strive to help students to:
- Understand the importance of a mature, responsible driving attitude.
- Become 100% safety belt users.
- Understand the dangers and costs of impaired driving.
- Begin learning basic driving skills.
- Learn and obey the rules of the road.
